Fish and Chips Combo - Sea Shack - places to eat in Cape Agulhas

Cape Agulhas is the southernmost tip of Africa, where the two southern oceans begin to meet. There is loads to do in the area, including sitting on the isolated beaches and just relaxing; which I’ve written about here. The local fishing boats head out almost daily to catch fish and you know that the establishments with the ‘catch of the day’ will definitely be fresh and tasty. There are many places to eat in Cape Agulhas and different cuisines. These are the recommended places we enjoyed on our weekend getaway in Cape Agulhas.

L’Agulhas Seafoods

L’Agulhas Seafoods is right in the middle of the small town. It was close enough to where we where staying that we took a short walk there around sunset. It was an unpretentious restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Their menu was extensive but this is a fishing village and we came to town for the fish. And it was very good fish.

Sea Shack

The Sea Shack is the place that kept popping up when I was researching restaurants and places to eat for our trip. We almost didn’t make it because the weather was horrible on most nights we were there and as this is an outdoor restaurant, it’s weather dependent. The Seas Shack in under a marquee on the beach in Struisbaai just outside L’Agulhas. It’s vibe was reminiscent of the strandloper on the west coast (which was too rustic for me, but a story for another day).

You choose a table, place your order at a little kiosk and someone brings it to your numbered table. It is an outdoor space, so I always find there is then no clarity about what is and is not a smoking area. So despite non-smoking sign, there was a bit of smoking around us. Likely because we were near the bar area but also close to play area. All I know is that I just gravitated to the heaters. We ordered and shared a platter for two which was really good. A definite return.

Willeens Restaurant

Willeens Arts and Crafts Restaurant was a lovely find. It’s in the Kassies Baai village overlooking the ocean which is a great view. The restaurant also houses an arts and crafts shop with artwork and products made by local community members. It was a misty day and we enjoyed a cosy lunch of picked fish and fish cakes.

Mien’s Tea Garden

We visited Mien’s Tea Garden for coffee and dessert after lunch. It is a popular spot but we visited on a quiet, rainy weekday and had the opportunity to sit and chat with Mien over home cooked malva pudding and tea. Mien, who also runs tours in the area, is a wealth of knowledge. The tea garden also sells locals art and has a lovely selection of succulents for sale, too.

Arniston Hotel Restuarant

After a pretty afternoon walking around the dunes and reserve around the Waenhuiskrans Cave, we visited the Bistro restaurant at the Arniston Spa Hotel. We had sushi and cocktails for dinner but they also serve various tasty looking surf and turf. The views from here are really pretty and a nice spot to enjoy a meal. We didn’t stay at this hotel but it looks amazing.

Wine on Main

Well, this isn’t a restaurant but it is wine and well, there’s always wine on our holidays. We visited Wine on Main for a wine tasting event that was happening on that day. Aside from that, the shop also has it’s own wine pairings. We did a tasting that was paired with ice cream and sorbet.
