Upside-down balconies, tilted rooms, light illusions and bundles of laughter. That was the essence of our visit to the Museum of Illusions in Cape Town on a cloudy October afternoon. I’d heard advertisements about this on the radio, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. To my delight, it was such a fun and interactive experience. We had a blast. If you are looking for a family-friendly, indoor activity this summer, then this is a great option.

The Museum of Illusions is a museum curated with exhibitions to challenge your perceptions and let your imagination run wild. It’s a series of optical illusions, colour and visual tricks. The first museum was in Croatia, but it’s now an attraction in places, including Cape Town and Johannesburg.
There are no age restrictions for this activity. We saw all ages, groups of friends, intergenerational families, and couples on a date, just like us. Even so, to enjoy this space truly, you need to tap into that part of yourself that celebrates a childlike sense of wonder. It was that wonder that had me laughing my heart out and leaning in to all the interactive exhibits.

Just before we started, the staff told us to expect to use our mobile phones throughout the exhibition. This added to the fun and memories. Next to each room or illustration, there’s a brief explainer plaque about what you are experiencing, and the staff on the floor were also helpful if you still missed it!.

In short, I loved this brief and funny break from the world. I will definitely be returning with my sister and niblings for more laughs.
